EPA NAMES SYLVANIA ENERGY STAR® 2003 PARTNER OF THE YEAR
SYLVANIA earns award for protecting the environment through the manufacture of energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs and other products.

Boston, Mass. (April 1, 2003)The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named OSRAM SYLVANIA as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for its outstanding contribution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by making and promoting energy-efficient products. The company’s accomplishments will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on April 15th, 2003.  Both the EPA and the Department of Energy are behind the ENERGY STAR awards.

SYLVANIA, a partner in the program since 1999, when it was recognized for its innovative and energy-efficient line of screw base compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), is being honored for its leadership in manufacturing/promoting products that earn the ENERGY STAR, the mark of environmental protection through energy efficiency. By choosing ENERGY STAR qualified products, the typical household can save up to 30 percent on their energy bills, or about $400 a year.

By the end of 2003, 65 percent of the SYLVANIA compact fluorescent product line will be Energy Star qualified.  This includes 17 compact fluorescent models in 41 packaging configurations. Included are a new three-way CFL, a candelabra-based CFL, and a BR40 reflector flood CFL.  In general, SYLVANIA CFL products use up to 75% less energy than a standard incandescent bulb and last at least six times longer with the equivalent light output, resulting in at least $25 in energy savings per bulb over its life.*

*Based on a minimum life of 6,000 hours at $0.10 kWh.

In 2001 alone, ENERGY STAR helped Americans save enough energy to power 10 million homes and reduce the air pollution equivalent to taking 12 million cars off the road – all while saving consumers $6 billion

“SYLVANIA is extremely pleased to partner with the ENERGY STAR program.  We also are committed to further the manufacture of compact fluorescent lamps and other products as a way to reduce energy consumption and the environmental impact of end of life product disposal,” said Charlie Jerabek, president and CEO, OSRAM SYLVANIA. “Increasingly our customers are also asking for products that give them value.  That’s where ENERGY STAR qualified products save consumers money, offering the same or better features as standard models that are also good for the environment. To our customers, that is value.”

The ENERGY STAR Award is given to manufacturers and retailers that successfully promote and deliver ENERGY STAR qualified products, saving consumers money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Award Winners are selected from thousands of organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

“The ENERGY STAR program couldn’t be such a success without the commitment of partners like SYLVANIA,” said Kathleen Hogan, director of EPA’s Climate Protection Partnerships Division. “The ENERGY STAR Awards are our chance to recognize those partners who, by manufacturing/promoting ENERGY STAR, helped put more than 750 million ENERGY STAR qualified products into American households over the last decade.”
